Cultivating Resilience: Debunking Myths in Trauma-Informed PE

Image
Cultivating Resilience: Debunking Myths in Trauma-Informed PE Resilience is often misunderstood as an innate trait, but it's more accurately seen as a dynamic process. In the same way, a resilient plant is one that can respond to stress in its environment. Whether facing drought, pests, or poor soil, a resilient plant doesn't merely survive; it adapts, grows stronger, and continues to thrive despite the challenges it encounters. This ability to respond to adversity is cultivated through a combination of environmental support, healthy foundations, and the plant's inherent characteristics. In this article, we'll explore the myths surrounding resilience in children and how we, as PE teachers, can foster true resilience by understanding and nurturing these critical elements. Myth 1: Resilience is Innate One common myth is that resilience is something you are either born with or without. This is like assuming a plant’s ability to withstand drought is entirely due to its spec...

The roots of Learning In Physical education

Image
The roots of Learning In Physical education  Physical Education (PE) settings are like vibrant forests, where each student is a unique tree with its own journey of growth. Just as a tree relies on its roots, soil, and sunlight to thrive, students depend on stable relationships, supportive environments, and personalized attention to reach their full potential. In this blog series, we’ll explore how understanding these elements can help us create a more trauma-informed and nurturing PE environment.  Struggling for Sunlight: The Fight for Attention Sunlight is vital for a tree's growth, just as attention is crucial for a child's development. When a tree is exposed to consistent, adequate sunlight, it grows straight and strong. Similarly, when children receive consistent, positive attention from their caregivers, they develop healthy, secure attachments and thrive emotionally and psychologically. However, when sunlight is scarce or inconsistent, a tree must adapt to survive....

Article: "Learners or Wayfinders: A New Way to Look at Learning as a State of Being" Introduction: Learning is not a static concept; it is a dynamic and ongoing process. Rather than viewing learning as a noun, we should understand it as a verb—a state of being. In this article, we explore the shift from identifying as "learners" to embracing the concept of "wayfinders." By adopting this perspective, we recognize that we are all on a continuous journey of understanding the world and ourselves. Let's delve into the transformative power of perceiving learning as an active and exploratory process. Embracing Wayfinding: As wayfinders, we understand that learning goes beyond being a passive recipient of knowledge. Instead, we actively navigate our paths towards deeper understanding and inter-contentedness with the world. This mindset encourages us to embark on a trans-formative perspective, where curiosity and exploration become driving forces in our educa...

The Language OF working 'With' Children.

Image
The Language OF working 'With' Children. Language is deeply intertwined with culture and society, as it reflects the beliefs, values, and practices of a particular community. It evolves over time, mirroring the changes in culture and society. Considering this, it is crucial to examine the language used to construct our pedagogical systems when discussing working with children. The words we choose to describe our interactions with children shape the systems and constructs within which we operate. More importantly, they significantly impact the experiences of the children whose lives intersect with these systems. In line with our previous discussion on the role of a "teacher," it is worth exploring the shift from the term "good teacher" to "skillful guide." (read more...) A skilled guide differs from a traditional teacher in that they join learners on their own journey instead of imposing a predefined path. They draw attention to information that aid...

Utopia or Furture? Idea's for a new Educational approach.

Image
Ideas' for a new Educational approach In this article I will be exploring the current approach to education as a passive process of consumption and its primary perceived location, The school.  I will then be exploring a Utopian vision for a new way to structure education as a thought experiment, the purpose of which to generate a new opportunity for perceiving education differently.  It Starts in School.. Lest Start with  The primary location for education to be 'done', schools serve an irreplaceable role in modern western society, that's right...caring for young people while adults get on with the business of living and working. The schools also then adopt the secondary role of delivering an education in preparation for joining the adults in life in the future. This may be a vast oversimplification, however the system is complex (not complicated, i see there is a difference) so i will focus my attention in the article around invariants and attractors of the educatio...

What Is a 'Good' teacher'?

Image
What does a good teacher mean? Its important to preface this extract by stating that I don't believe that one can 'be' a 'good teacher', a teacher is not a kind of status (new, experienced, expert0 or a badge that can be attained and boxed away ready to be diploid when the need for a 'good teacher' arises. Rather, I believe a teacher is an infinite process of 'becoming' much like learning, teaching for me is a 'way of being' in the world. Its a way of being that relies on others seeking to be guided as much as it is a self driven journey. Teaching is about crafting with another being or whole class of beings as your join them on a learning journey. The learning journey calls for a correspondence between others. to bring the world into the realm of what can be 'known'. The key here is the language, Lets start be changing the term 'good teacher'. I prefer the term 'skillful guide'. As mentioned above, in order...
